Chemical Sensitivities
There are two main types of chemical sensitivities. These can exist separately, or can co-exist in the same person at the same time:
1. Chemical Allergies - This is the result of an overactive immune system. This is similar to being allergic to pollens, foods, molds, or animal dander. Symptoms tend to be more immune related: runny nose, watery eyes, wheezing, difficulty breathing, asthma, eczema, hives, and anaphalaxis.
2. The body is breaking down toxins too slowly. The liver is the organ which breaks down toxins in the body. In this case, the liver is unable to keep up with the person's exposure to chemicals, and even a small exposure to a substance can make the person very ill. Symptoms of poor liver function can include: itchy skin, jaundice, hives, headache, pain under right side of rib cage, hypersensitivity to prescription drugs, feeling ill after eating beets, and other symptoms.
